Publishing Houses
In Shushi the first publishing house was opened by the Basel
missionaries in 1827, the second followed the opening of the
Ejmiatsin publishing house in Eastern Armenia. Missionaries
published books of moralistic, religious nature in Armenian,
Persian, Hebrew as well as Armenian language text books.
In 1835 it was transferred to the Clerical Department of Karabakh,
and was named the Publishing House of Armenian Clerical Department.
From mid-19th century till 1920 the following operated, too:
- Publishing House of Mirzajan Mahtesi Hakobyan (opened in
1877)
- Publishing House of Bagrat Ter-Sahakyan
The first books published in Shushi were:
1837 Byron’s “Prisoner of Chillon”, translated by Movses Zohrapyan
1839 “Stories or memories of the Alban world” monograph by
Yesai Hasan-Jalalyan
1881 “The Madman" novel by Raffi
1889 “David and Mher” epical novel, the second part of the
epos, edited by M. Abeghyan.
